FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Shameless Cash Grab or Summer Football We Actually Want?
Let’s be honest: when FIFA announced its new expanded Club World Cup, the reactions were... mixed. To some, it feels like a made-up tournament — a bloated exhibition designed more for sponsorship dollars than sporting significance. With 32 clubs set to compete, including controversial picks like Inter Miami, and the puzzling disqualification of a Mexican club in favor of a more "marketable" replacement, it’s not hard to see why fans are skeptical.
Add to that sluggish ticket sales, unclear qualification rules, and the general sense that FIFA is squeezing every last commercial drop out of the sport — and, yeah, the whole thing can feel a bit forced.
But here’s the thing: it’s competitive football. In the summer.
And that alone gives it real value.
For fans starving for high-level matches between club giants — this is a gift. While Europe is on break and major international tournaments don’t happen every year, the Club World Cup brings fresh matchups and rare cross-continental clashes to our screens. Whether it’s Bayern Munich vs. Boca Juniors, or PSG vs. Seattle Sounders, there’s intrigue. And there’s something new to talk about.
Even the skeptics might find themselves tuning in — not because it’s a perfect tournament, but because watching big clubs go head-to-head in meaningful(ish) games beats the off-season lull.
So… is it a cash grab? Kind of.
Is it unnecessary? Maybe.
But are we going to watch it anyway? Probably.
Let us know what you think. Are you excited? Annoyed? Somewhere in between?
Yeah, it’s definitely a money grab — but let’s be real, watching top clubs go head-to-head in the summer? I’m in. We rarely get cross-continental matchups like this, so even if it’s a made-up tournament, if the games are competitive, I’ll watch. That said, FIFA really needs to be more transparent with the rules and stop making marketing-based picks. Respect the sport.
